Jeans for Life
Listening to the radio at work today! They were talking about this fad going around. People actually pay $150 for what they call “Raw denim” jeans. Although I see this as extremely expensive, this is not all that new. The shocking part for me is what they do with them! Appearently, raw denim is denim which is not washed after dying during production. Most of the time denim is washed to soften it and to pre-shrink it and it is often artificially stressed so it appears worn-in. What people do is wear these jeans, in their rough and unworn state so they are broken in to their own bodies and the color fading comes from normal wear. The idea is to buy them and wear them for 6 months straight WITHOUT WASHING THEM! OK, anyone who find’s this gross, raise your hand!
I looked up “raw denim” in wikipedia and found it in an article about “denim.”
Search Amazon.com for men’s raw denim
I sort of understand going a few wears without washing your pants, depending on the wearer, but 6 MONTHS?!?! I know they probably have their reasoning. In fact, I’m sure they do.
I think it’s interesting that the same way we typically would think about something like wearing jeans for 6 months without washing them is the same way that God sees our own righteousness. All that we can ever do in ourselves that we think is good, is nothing but “filthy rags”! Isaiah 64:6 tells us:
“But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
I think it is interesting that people choose to live in jeans in that manner. Well, in the same manner, humans are naturally drawn to darkness; it’s our nature! John 3:19 tells us that men love darkness rather than light:
“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
I know that all men are NOT drawn to wearing pants for 6 months without washing them, but I think we can easily see the picture being drawn!
filthy jeans – kind of like – our righteousness
they love filthy jeans – kind of like – men love darkness
Just a thought to ponder about spirituality in the real-life!
I found the verses I was looking for on clearsight.org’s Bible for iPhone (I did so w/o the phone)
