I for one love to use my Android to do my blogging work when I’m not at my computer.  Check out the article I wrote about the tools I use over at FiveFreeApps.com.

In The News: Apple To Release 7 Inch iPads? Who’s Copying Who Now?

2011 February 8
by timmy

I just ran into some news about Apple.  Apparently they are planning on releasing a 7 inch version of the beloved iPad by Christmas.  Is this true?  Can it be?  I say “why not?”  Although a bigger screen may be better for multi-media consumption such as videos and movies, a 7 incher can be a lot more portable.

Wait a minute.  Isn’t there 7 inch Android tablets already on the market today?  The Samsung Galaxy Tab makes a good impression on those looking for a tablet that is more portable.  Is Apple actually copying someone else for a change?

What’s your opinion? Would you rather a 9-10 inch tablet for a richer multi-media experience or something closer to a 7 inch tablet to make it easier to bring with you wherever you go?

What Is Freelance Blogging And Why And How Am I Doing It?

2011 February 7

For some time now I have been keeping up this blog.  It started with me just posting stuff that popped into my mind.  Nothing was niche specific; it was just a place for me to release anything that was either going on or that interested me at the moment.

Eventually it turned into my own tech blog where I’d post anything to do with technology.  I wanted to begin blogging around a specific topic but I wanted to do it about something I love.  One more factor came into play though: I had to love writing and sharing about it.  Well, tech won the day and several years later I’m still going at it.

But what is the freelance blogging thing all about?

That’s when I began to desire to make some sort of an income from my blogging.  Let’s break it down, shall we? read more…

In The News: The Android Market Comes to the Web Today, or Not

2011 February 2

Android MarketIt was announced that today the Android Market website was going to be live today.  The idea behind the website is to… um… do what AppBrain used to be allowed to do: Find apps on the website and send them directly to your phone to be installed.  At least that’s the cool part of it.

Anyways, I was poking around on there today to see what’s up and everything looks cool, until I tried to sign in with my Google account.  Everytime I do  I get some “Invalid request” error message.  Now I understand that the error message means something a bit more technical than many people know, but at first glance I had to ask myself “how in the world can the request be invalid when all I did was follow the link Google gave me?!”

I’m not alone because check out the comments at the bottom of the announcement blog post!

Anyhow, check it out.  It’s a bigger way to explore apps and they’ve even made it easy to share apps with friends (also an AppBrain thing).  Hopefully soon you can actually sign in and use it as it was intended!

Gadgets, Gadgets and All Things Awesome!

2011 February 1

Hey peoples! I wanted to tell you about something new and exciting in the tech side of my life.

Most of you know that in the past I have enjoyed freelance blogging and working form home.  I used to write for MakeUseOf.com (a really cool Internet tips/tech blog) which I still peruse, comment and participate in the answers community there.  I don’t, however, write for them any more (sad faces, SOMETIMES I miss it).  I do miss the community there and I am still friends with a few of the writers.

Well, I am now involved in another writing gig and I know y’all will be interested in knowing about it.

aweseurs.com is a brand new blog being launched in February.  It’s tagline is “Connoisseurs of all things awesome” and it’ll cover all kinds of cool tech-type stuff from Androids and iPhones to computers, TVs and watches.  We’ll be scouring the Inter-webs to scout out all kinds of awesome stuff and then we’ll bring them to one place for you to find them!

I can’t tell you how much I love writing for this site so far!  Check out a few of the cool things I got to write about so far:

Contour GPS

With the Contour GPS sports camera, you can record in the first person while recording your route via GPS!  Check out the specs and you’ll see it has HD recording capability and a profile so low you’ll forget you’re even sporting it!

Motorola Xoom

As one of the best Android tablets to hit CES this year, the Xoom is helping to set the bar in the tablet market.  It’s got Honeycomb and that’s not all that’s sweet about it.

Motorola Atrix 4G

They are calling the Motorola Atrix 4G the post powerful smartphone to date and with the cool laptop docking system along with MobileView and Firefox web browsing they are blurring the lines between smartphones and computers.

Check out the site for even more cool stuff including the iCade iPad dock and the Verizon iPhone.  Leave a comment or two with opinions and suggestions!  I’ll try to keep y’all updated when cool stuff comes up over there.

How I Use My Android To Curb My Addiction To Website Analytics

2011 January 28

Break the Google Analytics ChainsI thought it was funny when an article emerged on ProBlogger.net about “how to break your blog traffic addiction” because that just happens to be something I used to struggle with.  You see, if you’re running a blog, you do want to keep an eye on your traffic.  This can help you in several ways but mostly it is so you can find ways of improving your blog.

There is danger in becoming too obsessed though.  It is easy to find yourself poking through all the stats many times throughout the day.  I know, I was there.  This can be a real time waster and can actually lead to you spending more time watching traffic and less time actually working on your blog.  Please, whatever you do, don’t put yourself in that situation.

There are ways of overcoming that addiction.  In fact the article on ProBlogger.net gave some good tips.  However those were not the methods that helped me.  Believe it or not, it was my smart phone that helped me (and still does, BTW).  There are two Android apps that I use to keep me from wasting precious hours addicted to my blog’s statistics.  They are mAnalytics and Analytics Widget.  Allow me to share what they do and how they’ve helped my blog statistics addiction.

mAnalyitics

The charm of mAnalytics is in the basics.  You see, this application only really gives you the basic statistics such as visits, pageviews, referrers and bounce rate.  There are a few more but you get the idea.  To get to all the real nitty-gritty you’d have to get to a real computer and log in.  However, with just a few statistics at my fingertips my appetite is satiated.

Analytic Widget

The Analytic Widget is what keeps me from spending the whole day poking around in mAnalytics.  This nifty app gives me the number of visits (or pageviews) for the day so far directly on my homescreen.  That’s about it.  This way all I have to do is glance to see how many I’ve got for the day.  I don’t need to log into the Google Analytics dashboard or even open any other app.  If there is a strange jump or something, then I can head to  the mAnalytics app or the main site and check things out.  Otherwise, no need to waste any time.

Many people set aside one time per day to go through their website analytics.  This is still a smart idea.  You want to keep tabs on everything so you can continue to improve your site.  These apps just keep me from obsessing, that’s all.

Local (Utica, NY) Police Department “Gets It” With Social Media

2011 January 25

Utica Police Department badgeI couldn’t believe it when I caught a glimpse of the newspaper article.  Apparently the Utica Police Department has entered into the age of new media.  They’re all hooked up with Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and they’re actually using them to their advantage!

You see, they are trying to connect with the community where they’re already at.  The question is, how are they leveraging their social media presence?  I’d like to take a look at what they’re doing and hopefully answer that question. read more…

Quick Tip: Sick Of Running Out Of Memory? Try This App On For Size!

2011 January 21
by timmy

Android Quick TipOk so I am currently in possession of the HTC Evo and I love it.  The issue is that I love trying out new apps and it is very easy to run low on memory (ROM that is).  The Evo comes with 1 gig of built in memory but maybe yours has less.  The 8 gig MicroSD card is helpful and I’ll show you why.

Many apps now have the ability to be installed on your SD card since the coming out of Android 2.2 (Froyo).  Of course you can move your apps to your SD card through the setting menu, but I found an app that makes it a lot easier.  Check out Advanced SD Card Manager.

This handy app lists all the apps on your phone making it easy to select the apps you want moved to your SD card.  Instead of navigating through the phone’s settings, with on click you can open this app and have a quick and easy-to-use list so you can just go to town.

That’s my tip for the day!  Let me know if this helps!

How I Fixed A Printer Problem Using PrinterShare And My Android

2011 January 17

PrinterFor the longest time I had a printing problem.  Yes, it is true, the one who used to know what is needed to fix printer issues for everyone else now had a printer issue of his own.  The problem was that I was running Ubuntu on my personal laptop and I wanted to print to a printer downstairs connected to the family desktop.  That in and of itself wasn’t an issue.  The problem came in when I couldn’t find Linux drivers for my specific printer.  I came close, but not close enough.  Print jobs just hung.  Don’t worry, this article will show you how I found a solution. That’s why I’m here, right? read more…
